Undergraduate Programs
The Department of Plant and Microbial Biology offers two undergraduate majors that lead to a Bachelor of Science Degree. The majors are administered at the college level by the Office of Instruction and Student Affairs.
Genetics and Plant Biology
GPB emphasizes the study of plants from the
molecular genetic to the organismal levels.
Microbial Biology
MB focuses on small life forms such as microbes, viruses, and fungi that make up the majority of planteary biomass.
Student Learning at PMB
Undergraduates studying at the Department of Plant and Microbial Biology acquire much-desired skills and training through science-based, laboratory curricula.
Outstanding teaching
Faculty in the Department have an
outstanding teaching record for these majors. In May 2009,
Mike Freeling
received the College of Natural Resources Distinguished Teaching Award,
joining
Kathleen Ryan
who
won this Award on May 17, 2008, and
John Taylor,
who received it on May 17, 2005. This award gets
presented by the College to acknowledge the efforts of faculty members who
have excelled in undergraduate teaching and made significant contributions
to the teaching mission of the College. Other PMB faculty have won
teaching awards, such as
Lewis Feldman,
who received the Berkeley campus' most prestigious award for teaching, the
Berkeley Distinguished
Teaching Award in 1996.
